Bon Accord Mangroves and Bucco Swamp
Rainforest Tour #1 /
Rainforest Tour #2
/
Grafton Sanctuary &
Arnos Vale
Little Tobago
/ Birding Packages
The Tour: We will begin our tour by making our way to
the far northwest coast of the island to Bon Accord
Lagoon to explore the Pigeon Point mangroves, freshwater
Bucco Swamp marshes and the unlikely but always "productive"
(in terms of bird sightings) drainage channels and ponds
that comprise the Bon Accord Treatment plant.
After paying the entrance fee (currently TT $12 pp) we will
enter a predominantly red mangrove forest in search of the
birds that frequent the area such as Copper-rumped
and Ruby-topaz Hummingbird, Bare-eyed Thrush, Gray
Kingbird, Barred Antshrike and Mangrove Cuckoo.

At the tidal
pool at the tip of the peninsula we'll look for various
wading birds: Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Little Blue,
Tricolored and Green Herons, American Golden and
Black-bellied Plover.
Once back at the van we'll make a quick stop at the Bon
Accord Treatment Ponds on our way out of the area to see
if there are any wading or shorebirds we "missed" in the
mangroves such as the Black-crowned Night Heron, Snowy,
Little and Cattle Egrets or Black-bellied
Whistling-ducks. We'll also search the surrounding trees
for the Belted Kingfisher and depending on the season,
listen for migrant warblers before heading for the Buccoo
Marsh.
|
At the
entrance to the Marsh visitors are asked to donate TT$1.00
per person to the groundskeeper. The coconut and guava trees
along the entry provide us with an excellent place to view
the Red-crowned Woodpecker as well as the
White-fringed Antshrike.
Once at the marsh, we'll search its edges for shorebirds
such as Spotted and Semipalmated Sandpipers,
Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Southern Lapwing and the
swamp itself for White-checked Pintail and other
ducks (including some North American migrants.)
